First you need to know a bit about web building terms. Don't worry about memorizing all of these terms. Just keep this page handy so you can refer back to it. The first mention of a term on the following pages is linked to it so you can just click on the underlined word and be back here.

Graphic: A photo, clipart, or other digital image that can be put on a webpage.

Tile: A small graphic that, when used as a background or border, can be repeated to give an overall look.

Plain: Made from one color with no additional graphic.
Textured: Gives the surface a "textured" look of some sort. There are two textured backgrounds here, the orange one on the outside border and the white speckled one under these words.
Patterned: Mad from a graphic, often a part of a photo to be used on the webpage. Can be used with or without a texture.

Background: The area behind your work. On this page, the orange panels around the edge and the speckled parchment that this text is on are the backgrounds. We use repeating tiles to make backgrounds.

Borders: The edges around the body of your web page. Can also be around a photo or other object on your page. Like backgrounds, borders are usually made from repeating tiles.

Link: (or hyperlink) A link is object or word that when clicked upon sends you to another place on your site or another website.

Website: An address on the internet that can include many web pages. (A website is a "book," and a web page is a "chapter" in that book.)

Webpage: One page in a website.(May be used to designate a personal website of more than one page.) A webpage can be seen without clicking on any more links, although it usually has links to other pages.

Navigation buttons: Buttons that include a link. Usually include "home," "next," and "back."

Divider: A small graphic that divides sections of a webpage.

Font: The typeface used on the page. Includes style, size and color.

Font families: Two or more typeface styles grouped together under one name. The viewer's computer will choose the first available typeface in the "font family."

Webset: The borders, dividers and navigation buttons on a webpage. (Can also include background and font.)
